Photos Summer - Autumn 2011

This morning we have snow!!!

It's party time in the village I live in.  Saturday night I was invited to the Women's Club party and tonight it was the Pensioner's Club party.  I love dancing the Horo - even though I can't keep up with some of the seniors!

I was walking about 3:15 this afternoon and look how low the sun is in the sky - our days are getting really short in terms of daylight!

An Autumn view from up on the hill - browns and golds and wood-burning stoves.

The leaves are gone - it's that time of year
This is a Block apartment building in Kazanluk where they have made it look cheerful with different colors.
Autumn Beauty!

This view reminded me of the San Francisco Bay Area with the fog rolling in.

Breakfast!

Look at these tools!

Nice place to hang out for a bit,

Making Pitka - the sunshine is an important ingredient

Warm and delicious!

The supplies everyone contributed.

The grill and chief griller!

Time to eat!

This is a huge bumble bee.  Look at it's size compared to the ladybug

And it gave me this incredible picture.  It took off just at I pressed the button for the photo. Pretty cool, huh!

Headed out for our afternoon walk.

The Village Center

Photo Op!

Any old car/van buffs?  This is another example of pristine care.

Look at how tall these leeks are.  Time for leek soup!

Parsley - yeah!

Katya has a beauty!  The turnips in her garden are white and some are black.

Then it was my turn to pull out a huge turnip.  I did, but it surprised me and I landed on my butt.

A walnut still on the tree - but not for long.
The color palate of fall is browns, golds and green.  Leaves are falling off trees and the amount of daylight is much shorter than a few short months ago.
Grapes have been picked and made into wine and the leavings have been made into the beloved Rakia.

View of my village from up on a hill.  I live in the tall white (block) building.
What's the saying about ".....until the cows come home?"  They are on their way home - it's about 5:45 in the afternoon.
Many but not all of the cows wear collars with bells like this one.

A few of them also wear collars and bells.  Once they get into the village they seem to know which street is theirs and will turn off to go home.  Then they wait at their gate until their human lets them into the yard.  I find it remarkable. These are the sheep I have the video of - walking on both sides of me.

What does this cloud look like to you?

To me it looks like a yoga pose with arms out to the side and the right left lifted to the back.
 Autumn Colors
Fields have been planted with a new crop.  I haven't found out yet what it is ... winter wheat? grass?
I went for a walk last Saturday.  It was a gorgeous afternoon in between rainy weeks.  I did a loop around my village taking a shortcut through what used to be sunflower fields.  Now cows and sheep are grazing and birds are gleaning the leftovers.
I walked up the track left by vehicles walking across acres of fields heading from one road into town to the other.
Not too muddy after several days of rain.  Below - autumn colors and clouds on the road home.
I walk by this old building often.  This day I enjoyed the lighting.

This nature Park has some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bulgaria.

Autumn is in the air and the leaves on the trees are beginning to change.  It was great to be out walking in nature after a 2+ hour bus ride.

We also visited Lovech which has several attractions.  This is one of the most wello-known.  It is a covered bridge over 100 years old and inside are numerous stores selling everything from hand carved trinkets to Bulgarian weaving and paintings, and lots of souvenirs.

The Singing Babas are also creative in their gardens and kitchens.  This was shared at a festival in Cherni Vit.
Fascinating - these birds were fun to watch, but locals don't think it's much fun when they land on their precious grapes  and other crops.  The grapes are on the verge of harvesting.

Isn't this a beautiful sight to behold on a morning walk!  I'm guessing the lower branches are trimmed to the level they are at by hungry goats on their morning walks.
This field was a surprise when I saw it...a reminder of about 6 weeks ago.  The cycle of life continues.
All the yellow fields have matured into brown ready to yield their seeds.

Fields just about ready to be harvested - some have been since I took this photo.
How beautiful are these!  One tomato down, four to go!
Morning walk in the hills.
Dog sees cat.  Cat sees dog.

Dog sees cat better from up close.  Cat says 'Ciao'.

Interesting light reflected as the sun nears the horizon.
A full rainbow right outside my window!

This sunset was so inspiring I went up onto the roof to watch and take photos!
On the banks of the Danube

Town Center - Svishtov

Hands and Doves - I love this sculpture in a downtown park.
Ancient carvings from other times and civilizations, found in Svishtov.

Flowers in the garden
